Book Review: Borrowing To Invest Review by evon (TNO Member since June 2002) The book description on the cover summarises very well what this book is about - "Using other people's money is a way to create more personal wealth for you. But do you know how to gain the most benefits? Do you understand the risks? Borrowing to Invest will explain how it works, answer your questions and put you on the right track." | |
Whether to borrow to invest is a personal choice. There is no right answer here. Some people are just not comfortable borrowing money. The authors of this book for example differ in their opinion on the subject. Noel is pretty much gung-ho about gearing. In his opinion, it is a strategy worth adopting by everyone who possibly can. Paul, on the other hand, could be described as a nervous nelly in this context. He has reservations about borrowing and needs convincing. Read this book and decide if gearing is suitable for you. This book has over 230 pages of information covering subjects you need to know to start creating wealth for your future, in addition to four specific chapters on gearing. The 46 chapters are short (each only a few pages), easy to read and many examples are used to guide you though what has been to some of us a mystery, and often relegated to the "too hard basket". I like the way the authors explained financial concepts, such as debt, equity and growth assets, in layman terms. It is a book you can pick up, read a few chapters, put it down and absorb what you have read and then pick it up again. Investing is not about putting your money in the bank and getting interest. Investing is about educating yourself and taking responsibility for your own financial destiny, as no one looks after your money better than you do. Knowledge costs you nothing to carry around; it is what you do with that knowledge that counts. I would suggest this book should be on all high school curriculum and in every public library. I highly recommend this book to new investors or people who had had little or no experience in financial matters. For those who are about to seek financial advice for the first time, this book will give you the ability to determine the path you choose to follow, with a level of confidence in your knowledge and understanding of the risks and benefits of investing.
