Book Review: Martin Pring's Introduction to Technical Analysis Review by maureen (TNO member since Nov 2001)
This is a value-for-money production and delivers exactly what is
promised - A lesson in understanding the basics of technical analysis. The
book and CD have virtually identical content, but with the CD, the
diagrams and actual examples are animated, and the dialogue is spoken
by Martin Pring. He has an English accent, and his voice is well suited
to the "text book" style. | |
The subject is broken down into 12 Chapters, which are then put into 3 groups 1. Basic concepts 2. Trend Indicators 3. Advanced Techniques On the CD each chapter has a quiz at its conclusion, so you can gauge your understanding of what you have just seen and heard. I can't say I 'enjoyed' the book and CD, but I can say I think it was necessary for me, just like homework. It's the kind of work you must put in if you wish to really understand charting. I will most certainly be doing it again and am very glad to have these reference materials at hand. The CD is easy to use and has very clear instructions and guidance. I like the way you can easily access any part of it through the menus. Any help needed can also be found at the web site. A benefit I got from doing this review was the fact that had to pay more attention to the contents and author. Martin Pring entered the financial markets in 1969, and is now a much sought after speaker. I was unable to find out exactly what he did before he became an educator, but he is certainly an innovator in that realm. He pioneered videos as an educational tool for technical analysis in 1987, and was the first to introduce educational interactive CDs in this field. His family are very involved with the business. His wife, Lisa, created the animated presentations contained in the tutorial, and also developed the web page (www.pring.com), and his daughter and son helped in the office. The web page is well worth a visit and you can see examples of the animated tutorials there, as well as get some great links to other sites and various other goodies. All in all, the book and CD are deceptively simple but contain a wealth of information, touching on psychology, bar charts, candlesticks, P&F, momentum, moving averages, support/resistance, the difference between log and semi log scaling and much more. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn Technical Analysis. Martin Pring's Introduction to Technical Analysis on sale now!
