Internet bride scam

The scam is simple. Marry me and you'll get $100,000 in gold for dowry.

A South Australian man flew to the west African nation of Mali last month to meet his supposed bride and to collect the dowry. What he didn't know was that he will be held hostage for 12 days and asked to pay a $100,000 ransom or have his limbs chopped off.

Scam Alert

Des Gregor, a 56-year-old from Hoyleton in SA's midnorth, is lucky to have escaped with the help of the Mali and Australian Federal Police. He is now warning others seeking love over the internet.
