How to spot a scam

1. Poor spelling, grammar and/or punctuation - Scammers, in general, are not the most educated bunch. Their messages are often plagued with spelling, grammatical or punctuation errors.

2. Prey on your greed - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But unfortunately, there are many people out there whose greed and ignorance surpass their sense of logic and good old common sense.

3. Sense of urgency - Scammers know all too well that in order to succeed in conning anything out of a potential victim, they have to do it fast (while the victim hasn't realised that it is all a scam). So the message often urges the potential victim to act quickly.

4. Cloud of secrecy - Scammers often ask their potential victims not to share the contents of the message with anyone for all sorts of reasons. The real reason - so you won't show it to someone who actually recognises it is a scam!

5. Dubious contact detail - Free email addresses are often used by scammers. Why would you trust anyone hidding behind a free email address?
