Beware of scam using Tax Office letterhead |

20 Oct 2006 - The Australian Tax Office is warning the public of hoax letters purporting to be from the ATO and seeking personal information about employees. The hoax letters require employers to submit employees’ names, date of birth, addresses, sex, tax file numbers, gross annual salary, and Australian citizenship details, under the pretext of an audit.
There is a suspicion that the information gathered by the scammers will be used for identity theft.
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. For example, a fraudster may apply for credit cards and bank loans using your identity. Or your bank account could be compromised and used for money laundering.
Employers should contact the Tax Office if they have received a letter like this by calling the ATO at 13 28 66.
